SAINTE-ANNE
14°26.2’N - 60°53.2’W


Protected by the southeastern peninsula of Martinique, Sainte-Anne is one of the largest and most popular anchorages on the island. In high season (November through March), more than 400 yachts moor in the bay, from Pointe Marin to Anse Caritan. No mooring is permitted less than 300 meters from the beach (yellow buoys) to preserve swimming security and marine environment around Saint-Anne. An Organized Mooring Area (OMA) in the bay of Sainte-Anne is planned, moorings should be installed and facilities & services available for cruisers (public washrooms, anchorage office, recycling facilities, etc).

You can tie your dinghy to the town dock, opposite the church (to the right, La Dunette restaurant has its own dinghy dock) and to the floating dock in Anse Caritan (Pirate Beach restaurant). You can clear customs at Snack Boubou .

Leader Laverie - Located at Domaine Caritan, accessible by dinghy, this self-service coin laundry is open daily and is equipped with modern washing and drying machines.

SudLibpublic transportation’s A-line provides a low-cost and convenient option to take sailors from Sainte-Anne (bus station) to Le Marin (Artimer/Marine Bay/Marina) Monday through Saturday. You can buy a single-ticket in the bus (€2.10) or purchase a pre-paid pass online. Bus routes, schedules and fares on www.sudlib.fr.

La Dunette (05 96 76 73 90) - Enjoy grilled specialties, local fish, fresh lobster or the drink of the day with tapas on the private dock. La Dunette also features local bands playing regularly. They have 15 air-conditioned rooms with a terrace overlooking the bay, perfect for a few days break. New: on-premise laundry.

Bao Beach (06 96 21 30 05) - At Pointe Marin, Bao Beach offers a wide terrace opening out onto the bay, fusion cuisine prepared from fresh produce, fresh lobster in season, sun loungers, killer cocktails and top class tunes...Reservations recommended.

Anchorages

Le Rendez-Vous (05 96 76 90 36) - A nice restaurant on the seafront where you can enjoy Creole specialties with an unbeatable view over the beautiful bay of Sainte-Anne. Direct access by dinghy. Karaoke on Friday nights, great breakfast and sunset cocktails in season.

ASHORE

The church opposite the dock, burnt down by the English and rebuilt in 1730.

Le Calvaire, a spectacular viewpoint over the bay.

Trace des Caps, a 34km long hike from Anse Caritan to Macabou (south of Le Vauclin): lots of beaches including popular Grande Anse des Salines, the perfect Caribbean beach with turquoise water, white sand and coconut palm trees. (Caritan-Salines: 1,5 hours)

Piton Creve-Cœur (easy-1,5 hours) hiking trail: ruins, forest, great views over Le Marin and the marina;

Sainte-Anne Nature Reserve for birds (by motor boat or kayaking).

Anchorages

The marine center of Martinique offers everything for yachts and many professional services as well.

Cul-de-Sac du Marin is a large protected bay with a modern marina including a new compound, moorings, haul-out facilities and 3 hurricane holes on the eastern side of the bay.

New anchoring rules are in effect in the bay of Le Marin. Anchoring in the hurricane holes is forbidden since 2018, except during a hurricane warning. The marina has placed a total of 250 mooring buoys (between the marina and beacon 7) in order to better organize the mooring area.

THE MARINA AND DOCKS

You can clear in at the Capitainerie (new marina compound, upstairs) or at CAP gas station, on dock n°3 (Visitors dock).

Caraïbe Service Center: 3 workshops located in front of the marina docks, refit and maintenance work under warranty, and proximity to boaters which allows for very rapid work in rigging, power, electronics, metal. Caraïbe Shipchandler: a 300 sqm store located opposite the dinghy dock, a complete range, and the biggest brands on the market for marine electrical, refrigeration, hydraulics, chandlery, electronics, pumps, solar panels, cooking systems, security gear, dinghies. Express delivery of any product not available in stock.

Mécanique Plaisance (05 96 74 68 74) is agent for Yanmar, Tohatsu, Volvo Penta, ZF, Honda, Perkins and Westerbeke. They stock a wide range of diesel and outboard engines, generators, spare parts and batteries. They will advise you in the repowering of your boat and will make any kind of repair after diagnosis. They have a workshop and another shop at Carenantilles boatyard.

Le Ship (05 96 74 68 74) is a well-stocked chandlery offering a wide range of branded windlasses, stoves, fridges, dinghies, blocks, liferafts, ropes, safety equipment, guides, charts, Lofrans and Eno spare parts and all you need for your comfort onboard.

Carenantilles (05 96 74 77 70) - is a complete marine refit center in the Southern Caribbean recommended by many captains for the high standard and quality of on-site services available, the reliability of its 2 travel lifts 80T and 440 T, and the respect of European environmental standards. The boat yard can handle complete refits and repairs on any size and type of yacht up to 50m.

Incidences (05 96 747 747) - This sailmaker is located in a huge magnificent 650 m2 custom built loft - the biggest in the Caribbean. Hervé, the owner, and his experienced staff can take care of any kind of sails and canvas jobs: new sails, repairs, biminis, dodgers, dinghy covers... Positioned along a dinghy dock, Incidences is equipped with a custom crane to lift sails directly into the premises. To better service their clients, a professional skipper will come to your boat to remove and replace your sails or canvas.

Sud Média Services (05 96 71 09 31) - Jean-Luc and Anne-Catherine provide custom boat graphics and lettering. SMS also prints t-shirts in your boat’s colours.

ANSE NOIRE & ANSE DUFOUR

Anchorages

These two picturesque anchorages should be avoided by northerly swells. Great snorkeling with sea turtles.

LES ANSES D’ARLET

Anchoring is temporarily forbidden in the two bays. Moorings must be used by any boat under 25t. The authorities are working on new anchoring and mooring regulations. No information available at the time of going to press.

The mooring site in Anses d’Arlet is an ecological Organized mooring area (OMA). Anchoring is restricted to 5 selected areas, 3 in Grande-Anse (113 moorings) and 2 in Petite Anse d’Arlet / Baie du Bourg (48 moorings), in order to better organize the mooring area and protect the reefs. The moorings are marked Espace Sud and are subject to fee (the white ones are for yachts, the blue ones for fishers). Various services for cruisers are as part of the Organized Mooring Area: public restrooms, water (with pre-paid card from the mooring agents), bins, etc. You should go to the Dockmaster’s office (Capitainerie) for formalities and payment of mooring fees. At the time of printing, clearance is still at Cyberbase in Les Anses d’Arlet (Bourg). Clearance at the Dockmaster’s office in Grande Anse is under study.

GRANDE ANSE D’ARLET

A traditional fishing village with clear and calm water, a golden sand beach, colorful pirogues and restaurants all along the waterfront. A variety of watersports are available. This is a very popular anchorage with yachties and locals alike, especially on weekends.

Chez Evelyne (05 96 48 39 38) - This is a very popular beach restaurant where Evelyne and her son Jean-Louis serve fresh lobster and grilled fish with home made gratins. After lunch, the deckchairs on the beach welcome you for a long and lazy afternoon.

PETITE ANSE D’ARLET

This is where you find the very charming and authentic small village (Bourg) of Les Anses d’Arlet and its gorgeous stretch of golden sand. Just opposite the dock, the 18th-century church and along the waterfront promenade, brightly painted creole houses. There is an ATM, a pharmacy, a market, a bakery, some shops and many restaurants.

ANSE A L’ANE

Anchorages

It is a picturesque anchorage with a pretty golden sand beach and palm trees. The regular ferrry service back and forth to Fort-de-France and Trois-Ilets as well as the many water sports can make it choppy. Leave the ferry channel clear. You can leave your dinghy on either dock. This anchorage should be avoided if swells.

ANSE MITAN & POINTE DU BOUT

Opposite the bustling city of Fort-de-France, this vast anchorage area is popular with yachts. Leave the ferry channel and the swimming areas clear. Located near restaurants, hotels and the Pointe du Bout holiday resort district, Anse Mitan offers a number of services and ferry access to Fort-de-France.

The anchorage is on the east side of Baie des Flamands, below and west of Fort Saint-Louis. The vast dinghy dock makes landing easy and comfortable. Savannah Park and the Fort-de-France waterfront incorporate the Malecòn, a promenade which connects areas for concerts, cultural exhibits and ethnic dining.

Polymar (05 96 70 62 88) - Based in the haul-out compound, Max and Cedric provide all you need in chandlery, plumbing, electrical supplies, marine plywood, deck hardware, hydraulic steering. The store offers also a wide range of fishing equipment. Polymar has two other shops in Le Marin and Robert.

Debrouilla.marine (06 96 459 220) -You can spot Pascal easily at the carénage, with his black service van decorated with his logo. Pascal is agent for Mercury. He will fix anything electrical and mechanical. He sells, installs and repairs underwater led lighting, marine hifi and lifts.

Sea Services Shipchandler (05 96 70 26 69) - Located within walking distance from the waterfront and dinghy dock, this extensively stocked chandlery offers a wide range of deck hardware, marine paints, maintenance products, ropes, pumps, marine charts. They have a great choice of Saint-James and TBS marine clothing. You can do Customs clearance at Sea Services during working hours.


ASHORE

Fort Saint-Louis dates from 1640 and is a working French naval base. The guided tours (1,5 hours) take you only to some parts of this massive colonial fortress. Highlights include the views across the bay and the fort’s numerous iguanas.

Schœlcher Library - Disgned by Henri Picq, the library was built in Paris and displayed at the 1887 World Exposition. It was then dismantled, shipped in pieces to Fort-de-France and reassembled in its current location.

Saint-Louis Cathedral - Inside, enjoy the beauty of stained glass windows and precious pieces of furniture (a marble altar, a monumental organ, carved wooden pulpits…).

Pre-Colombian Archeology and Prehistory Museum - A beautifully restored colonial house with archeological finds from prehistoric Martinique and testimonials of the Amerindian history.

History and Ethnography Museum - Visitors can admire a restored late 19th century
bourgeois interior with original furniture and objects.

This is the place on which Christopher Columbus landed in 1502. Paul Gaugin, the famous artist, used to live in this small fishing town. SAINT-PIERRE

Saint-Pierre was the capital of the island and used to be called the Paris of the West Indies until it was totally destroyed by the 1902 Mount Pelée eruption. Some 30,000 of its inhabitants died, leaving only one survivor, a convict named Cyparis, protected by his thick-walled jail cell. All but one of the vessels anchored in the harbor sank in the tidal wave that followed the eruption.
Saint-Pierre is now a peaceful town recognized as a City of Art and History.

Anchorages

In order to protect the 9 ship wrecks sunk following the 1902 volcanic eruption, 3 yellow buoys and the head of the jetty mark a «no anchor zone». Within this area, 4 white moorings only for use of dive boats. An organized mooring area will open beginning of 2024 with 130 eco-friendly connected buoys in 3 separate zones along the bay of Saint-Pierre. A mooring fee is applied. Services available in the mooring area include clearance, water provisioning, pump out & waste disposal, dinghy docks...

Saint-Pierre is a port of entry. You can clear customs at L’Alsace à Kay (a restaurant and deli specialized in cuisine from Alsace) rue Gabriel Péri and at the tourist office located at Maison de la Bourse (a rebuilt replica of the old Chamber of Commerce).

For your provisions: there are supermarkets, bakeries, butchers, and on the seafront, the catch of the day is sold by the fishermen. You’ll find also ATM’s, 2 car rental companies, a vet for your four-legged companions and many restaurants.

During your visit to this a resolutely modern architectural setting, you will discover this dramatic event which changed the history of Martinique. The audioguide will help you visit the new permanent exhibition which pays homage to the victims and presents the remains of the catastrophe.

The Earth and Sciences Discovery Center -A unique opportunity to learn about the science of our ever-changing planet through interactive exhibits.

ATLANTIC COAST

HAVRE DU ROBERT

Extending over 3 square miles between Larose peak in the south and Rouge peak in the north, Havre du Robert is a vast bay protected by coral reef and a dozen of islands with many popular anchorages (Ilet Madame, Ilet Chancel with iguanas …).. At the end of the bay, Le Robert, a small fishing village will show yachtsmen another facet of Martinique.
The water of Le Robert is an ideal site for coastal cruising, yawl races and regattas.
